About Cockatoos
Generally white in color, Cockatoos also come
in colors of grey, pink, blacks and even in deep blue. There are seventeen
species of Cockatoos and most are found in the Indonesian islands. They
are sweet natured and make great pets when they are well raised. Bonding
with their owners is achieved easily. Cuddle them whenever you can…they
love it.
Cockatoos don’t have much capacity to learn to talk. Their voices are
not as sweet as some other species of Parrots and/but are understandable
when they say a few words. Social in nature, they like to share their
meal time with other Cockatoos. But you can give his own plate.
Cockatoos are not choosy about food. Meat, milk products, fruits and
vegetables are generally eaten by them. Cockatoos love to have spray
baths.

Cockatoos as Pets
Cockatoos as birds are beautiful, affectionate, intelligent, acrobatic
and social. They are the most favorite choice as pets amongst Parrot
species. Cockatoos are softer and me affectionate version of the brilliantly
colored and magnificent Macaws.
While you may be impressed by their vocal abilities, you may be shocked
by their chewing capability. Their intelligence and curiosity make them
skillful escape artists, puzzle solvers, good learners and performer
of tricks.
Cockatoos as pets demand your almost constant attention and affection.
They like to come out of their cage and spend time with you.
CAUTION: Cockatoos, if denied attention and affection tend to become
neurotic which can lead to self-mutilation and feather picking and other
odd behaviors.
Well trained Cockatoos are delightful to keep as pets.
Cockatoo Behavior
Cockatoos are different in some ways from other Parrots and even different
from each other. Their behaviors vary greatly and have been a puzzle
to scientists.
They become aggressive when they are not cuddled or pampered, their
moods change quickly. One minute they can have fun and then become contemplative
in the next. There are obedient Cockatoos and there are destructive
Cockatoos. However, it is joy to see them sing and dance and flap their
wings, stomp and romp about when they are in a playful and happy mood.
Distinctive traits of Cockatoo behavior is manipulation and contemplation.
In this they are closer to human beings. To see your Cockatoo in its
best behavior, good training is absolutely necessary.
Goffin Cockatoo

Covered in beautiful white feathers, the Goffin Cockatoo is a delightful
family pet. Gently disposed, it is fun loving, a good entertainer, smart,
intelligent, curious and energetic. It likes to snuggle and cuddle around
you. Goffin Cockatoos are very talkative.
They live for about 65 years and are mostly found in Indonesian islands of Tenimber.

Moluccan Cockatoo
|
Shift to lowland forests of Moluccan islands of Indonesia and you will
find the largest of the ‘white’ Cockatoos who take their name after
the islands. These birds are native to Seram and the surrounding islands
of Saparua and Haraku.
They are non-migratory birds. These birds are quite intelligent and
sensitive with a loud, noisy voice and a strong beak. They are not suitable
as pets but if you do keep this bird as a pet, you may need a bigger
house than your apartment. Train it very well and you will get a ‘lap-bird’,
a watch dog and a friend for life, all rolled into one. Moluccan Cockatoos
need to be close to human beings and require mental stimulation. It
is capable of mimicking human speech.

Its diet consists of fruits, vegetables, seeds, nuts and pellets.

Umbrella Cockatoo

Umbrella Cockatoos can be very good, cuddly pets. They are very affectionate
and form strong bonds with its owner, which can be a little imposing.
Allow them and they will learn to manipulate you. They are social, gently
disposed, acrobatic and energetic. They do not talk much.
To get attention, exercise and a change of environment, they need to
get out of their cage each day for some time. But you should train it
well for that.

Umbrella Cockatoos get their names from the white crest which normally
remains flat on their head but unfurls like an umbrella when raised.
These birds are found in Moluccan islands of Halmahera, Obi, Batjan,
Tidor and Ternate. Their lifespan is between 60 to 65 years.

Rose Breasted Cockatoo

Also known as ‘Galah’, the Rose Breasted Cockatoo is a native of Australia.
These birds have rose-pink chest, neck, face and under parts. Wings
and tails are grey which stand in contrast to the rose-pink color to
give it a striking look. These birds are considered pests as they are
seen to destroy crops in many regions. These Cockatoos are very playful,
intelligent and can become very affectionate when bred in captivity.
They too need constantly to play with toys and objects to chew as source
of metal stimulation.
Rose-breasted Cockatoos when bred at home are healthier than the wild ones. They tend to grow fatty tumors and need a non-fat diet of vegetables and grains.

Maturity brings unpredictability in their nature. Don’t allow it too much ‘perch’ time on your shoulder.
Male Cockatoos are better talkers than female ones, though both sexes have the capability to mimic human speech.
You are not advised to keep your Rose-breasted Cockatoo untrained as it can easily make your life insane with its constant noise.

Palm Cockatoo

Palm Cockatoos are noisy birds of the forests and are mostly found in
Cape York Peninsula in Queensland. Residents of the tropical forests,
eucalyptus and savannah woodlands of Australia, they are also found
in New Guinea, Aru Islands and Indonesia.
They are distinguished by their size and color and physical feature
such as the huge beak, black feathers, large open crest, a red and black
tongue and red cheeks.

They have the capacity t mimic sound of the forests and other animals.
Pal Cockatoos are mostly found in pairs or small flocks.

Sulphur Crested Cockatoo

It is a large white cockatoo and is the inhabitant of the woods of Australia and New Guinea. This bird is found in huge numbers in these countries and is sometimes regarded as pest. This bird loves to travel in the forests in which it lives and also likes to wander into rainforests and tropical forests. It is an extremely intelligent bird and very curious too.

Lifestyle of Sulphur crested cockatoo
A Sulphur crested cockatoo has a long lifespan and can even
live up to 70 years in captivity. However, while in the wild
they live for about 20-40 years. A unique characteristic of
this bird is engaging in geophagy that is the eating clay
for detoxifying the food. This bird also produces a powder
for waterproofing itself.
Temperament
This bird is often known for its loud noises but it is also
known for its sweet and affectionate nature. If reared as
a baby it becomes very affectionate towards its owner. It
needs attention and therefore anyone who wants to have it
as a pet should have enough time to devote to this bird. Since
it requires regular exercises to stay fit it is important
for the owner to have time for the bird and play with it so
that it can climb, stretch and play and can enjoy itself.
Diet
While in the wild the Sulphur crested cockatoo feeds on
seeds, grains and insects. But while in captivity it needs
to have a good diet of pellets and seeds with fruits and vegetables.
This is important because in captivity cockatoos can suffer
from diseases related to malnutrition.
