Training
Your Pet Macaw |

|
Macaws can be easily trained to talk and as well as learn the acrobatic tricks. However, whether your pet would like to talk or to perform tricks entirely depends on the personality of the Macaw and also on the time that is devoted to a particular type of training.
Before you begin your training you need to focus on the key area that the macaw is perfectly settled in your home. After you see that it is comfortable in its new surroundings then it is up to you to train it perfectly. You need to invest good time in training the macaw because other wise it would not be able to achieve what you want it to achieve. To achieve this you need to:
- Build a strong bonding with the macaw so that the bird respects you as the owner...
- When you are teaching it to talk use one phrase at a time...
- Let the macaw get used to training session and therefore spend at least an hour for training the macaw...
- Never let the bird get distracted and for that you need to train the macaw in a quiet room...
|
How to tame your Macaw
It is important to tame your macaw before you train it. For taming your macaw you need to give the macaw time to settle down. Here are some pointers that would let you know the secret of taming your macaw.
- You need to sit in front of the cage of the bird and talk to it for lengths...
- See how it behaves while in the cage and if it is aggressive then give more time for taming it...
- Slowly give food to the bird with your fingers first and after you find it accepting the food then offer food from your hand...
- Never scream or punish the bird if it bites you as it will unnerve the bird and might make it more aggressive. This is a very common feature with Blue and Gold Macaw and if you face such a problem with your Blue and Gold Macaw then it is better to handle it with patience...
Things to keep in mind while
training your Macaw
There are some important pointers that you should keep in mind while training your macaw. For example if you have a hyacinth macaw then you should follow a particular type of training and that can be vastly different from training any other type of macaw.
It is a must that the hyacinth macaw should be exposed to your family members and to you at a very early age. This is because without early socializing and training the hyacinth macaw can hurt people very badly once its beak becomes strong with age.
If you have a Hahns Macaw then you are dealing with a small child as this bird is extremely temperamental and craves for attention. While training this bird you should pamper it to a large extent so that you can get good results.
If you are expert in birds then the Scarlet Macaw is the bird for you. You have to be very careful while you are training this bird. If the bird screams then never give any reward to the bird, and if you find the bird to be stressed take some time before you start training session with the bird.

6 Safe Ways to Give Your Macaw Exercise
|
|
When you are trying to give your macaw some opportunities for exercising you need to take care that the bird never becomes boisterous. This is a problem often seen with macaws and therefore you should never encourage bad behavior. Whenever you find your macaw not behaving properly you should mildly admonish its behavior.
Swings are loved by macaws and therefore you should allow your macaw to sit on the swing and learn the basic trick training. It is preferable that you take your macaw outside the cage for exercise because indoor is not a preferable area for exercising. |
All the macaws love to chew and therefore are destructive and chewing is an exercise for them. Thus always provide them with wooden toys and take care that nothing valuable is within their reach while they are having their exercises.
Among the macaws the Hyacinth Macaw is especially known for its size and since it has a wingspan of 4 feet it needs adequate exercise. In our membership site you would come to know what exercises are beneficial for a hyacinth Macaw and how you can ensure that the macaw stays safe during the exercise. It is a good idea for you if you can give your Hyacinth Macaw some time, say, about 1 to 2 hours so that it can visit the play area or its gym and flex its muscles.
If you have a military macaw as a pet then it is must that it gets adequate exercise as this bird has a structure which enables it to fly for several hundred miles in a day. Thus your military macaw needs to spend about 2-4 hours outside the cage so that it can exercise properly.
If you have a scarlet macaw as a pet then you need to give it lots of opportunities of climbing. Thus you need to take it out and under your careful inspection and affection the scarlet macaw would learn to do exercises. Give it lots of toys since chewing is another important exercise for it.
In our membership site you would get detailed articles on how you can ensure that your macaw does its exercise safely.

Macaw Toys and Why they are Important
|
|
Macaws love to play with toys and therefore you should provide your macaw with various kinds of toys. Also they love to chew and if you want to stop it from chewing all the valuables in your house give it wooden toys to chew. The scarlet macaw loves to chew and thus you should give them wooden toys.
If you have a blue and gold macaw as pet then the toys for it should be very strong since it has extremely strong beak and it is destructive and can easily break any toy that is not hard enough.
The Hyacinth Macaw needs to have plenty of toys as it needs to chew a lot to maintain its beak and jaws and thus you should offer varieties of toys to this bird. This is same with the Green winged macaw also as it also needs to chew strong toys for maintaining its beak and jaws.
|
In our membership site you would find many toys that are loved by the macaws. Also you would come to know which type of toy you should buy for your macaw that it would really enjoy.

Your Macaw's Diet and Nutritional Requirements

|
Your Macaw would need a good diet full of nutrition. If you have a Harlequin Macaw then you need to feed it with either good pelleted parrot food or good seed based parrot food. Along with these commercially formulated diets it would also need fruits and vegetables for nourishment. These will help it have a good immune system.
Whether you have a blue and gold macaw or a scarlet macaw or a hyacinth Macaw you need to feed them with leafy green vegetables such as broccoli and spinach along with fruits like bananas, apples, grapes and oranges. Also in their diet you can add cooked rice, meat and bean and can also give boiled eggs too. |
Also your macaw should never have chocolate, avocado, and coffee or salt since avocado, chocolate and coffee are toxic for these birds. Also macaws cannot excrete salt and therefore avoid salty food. Fresh water given frequently would keep your macaw hydrated throughout the day and night.
It is equally important to ensure that the food that you
serve to your pet is safe for it. Many parrot owners inadvertently
serve food to their loved feathered buddy that are actually
poisonous or deeply harmful for the bird. Some of
the foodstuffs to avoid giving to your macaw include:
- Sprouted lime
- Apple seeds
- Garlic
- Sweet peas
- Caffeine
- Fava
- Acorns
As a member of our site you would get to know what exactly the other nutritional requirement of your macaw is and what you should feed it to keep it healthy.

Safe chewing fun for Macaws
|
|
Macaws need to chew for exercising their large beaks and in most cases they do not cause any destruction if they are provided with chewing toys. It is often seen that hyacinth macaws and scarlet macaws can cause destruction in the houses if they are not provided with chewy choices. Thus it is important to provide them with wood toys which are hard to break and they would immediately start chewing them and spare the other household valuables.
In the lack of chew toys, it is most likely to chew
up everything it comes across in your house or may display
aggression and other behavioral problems. |
If you are not able to provide with wood toys for your macaws then give them branches of various trees to chew. The trees whose branches are favorites of macaws include:
- Pine
- Balsa
- Poplar
- Cactus
- Birch
- Plum
- Maple
However there are some trees whose branches are not suitable for macaws and these are
While oleander and avocado are toxic the redwood though non toxic can cause damage because it splinters easily.
If you do not have wooden toys then you can try wood kitchen spoons, empty spools of sewing threads and clothespins also for helping the bird do its chewing exercise. To know more about these be a member and explore our site and you would learn more about these toys.

Keeping Your Macaw’s Cage Clean

|
It is important to keep an expandable cage for your macaw if you have got a baby macaw. Even other wise the macaws are large birds and it is better to keep them in large cages as then they get enough space to roam about and also able to expand the wings fully without touching the sides of the cages. Also the perches should be placed in such a fashion that the macaws can move freely from one perch to another so that they do not suffer from muscular dystrophy.
The cage should also be very durable and the water and food dishes should be cleaned regularly. The perches and the dirty toys should be washed every week and in every alternate week the floor of the cage should be thoroughly washed with soap and water. The aviary and the cage should be disinfected once in a year and anything that is destroyed such as broken perches or broken toys should be replaced immediately. If possible then change the bird's cage before it is damaged.
|
Our membership site lists all the ways you should clean the surroundings of
your macaw.
- Clean the cage thoroughly. Avoid strong disinfectants...
- Change newspaper lining daily...
- Wash the food and drink bowls and the tray daily...
- Clean the grate regularly...
- Perches and toys should be thoroughly cleaned at
least once a week...
- Avoid dampness as it can lead to bacterial growth...
As they say, prevention is always better than cure. To prevent your macaw from
falling ill, take the following precautions:
- Regular veterinary check-ups...
- Do not expose your macaw to extreme hot or cold weathers...
- Do not ignore even minor injuries...
- Keep it away from loud noises, pollution and other pets...

It's difficult to believe that the same parrot
used to be an expert at biting fingers."

The main reason why parrots are a favorite pet worldwide
is their inherent ability to learn amusing tricks and mimic
human voice. However, it should never be imagined that training
a parrot is an easy job. It is important to remember that
your parrot comes from a wild habitat and was not meant to
be domesticated, tamed or trained. At the beginning, your
parrot might strongly resist being trained.
Thus, training a parrot needs utmost patience, and often,
a considerable amount of time. However, the returns are mostly
worth the effort many times over. Also, it is always easier
to train a baby parrot than an adult one. Though it is not
impossible to train an adult parrot, it is difficult to train
one that was improperly trained a s a baby or had suffered
some trauma.
All About Your Parrot lends you handy tips
on how to break the ice with your Macaw, communicate
with it and train it to become a pet that you would
love to show off.
Everything that you might consider trivial might be very crucial
for the health and happiness of your parrot and would ultimately
affect your relationship with it. Following are the most common
questions new parrot owners are confused about:
- Where should I place the cage – Bedroom, living
room, balcony, one that offers a view of the sky, one
that is in shade?
- How would I know if my Macaw is ready for training?
- Where to hold the training – bedroom, balcony,
garden, terrace?
- How long should the training continue?
- Should I train it alone or ask my family to join in?
- What should I do if the parrot doesn’t seem to
be paying attention?
- How do I make my Macaw potty-trained?
- How can I let my Macaw know that I am happy with its
progress and that I love it?
- How do I control my Macaw from hissing or biting?
- How would I know when is the right time to make it
sit on my finger?
