Training
Your Pet Cockatiel |

|
When your cockatiel has spent some time within the house then it is time to train the cockatiel. There are thumb rules that you need to follow while training your pet cockatiel and these include:
- You should never force your cockatiel do anything that it is not willing to do. If you force it then the bird would become aggressive.
- When you are training the bird make sure that the area is quiet so that the bird can concentrate on what you are saying and also it feels comfortable.
- The sessions should be short. You can go for two or three ten minutes session and it is enough for the cockatiel
- Always provide good rewards for your cockatiel. It is better to have food reward along with head scratch and words of praise.
- Have patience while training the bird because it will take time to train the bird.
- It is better that you read a manual before training the cockatiel. It would help you immensely.
For guidance in training a cockatiel you can go to our membership site and browse through the section on the training of cockatiel. It would help you in properly training your cockatiel.
|
How to tame your cockatiel
When you are planning to tame a cockatiel then it is better to buy a young bird as it is always easier to tame a younger bird. For taming the bird you need to keep it in a smaller cage with perches and put the cage in such a corner of the house from where it can watch all the activities of the house. This would help the cockatiel get used to the people of the house and it will be easier for you to tame it.
- During the first week you should always come close to the cage of the cockatiel but never come very close to it because it might make the bird nervous.
- Choose a name for the bird and use it whenever you are near the cage so that the bird gets accustomed to the name
- Two or three short sessions in a day are must for the taming of the cockatiel and if you are busy in some days then you should take out some time so that the bird gets to be in contact with you at least once in the day.
- You should always be friendly whenever you approach the cage and provide the bird with food and water so that the bird comes to know that you are not going to harm it.
- Try to find out the favorite food of the bird and give it as a reward to the bird whenever it does something good.
Things to keep in mind while training your cockatiel
Before you start training a cockatiel you should keep in mind that cockatiels are loud birds and while training the bird you have to tolerate a bit of noise. However, you can train the bird not to scream. There are some things that you should keep in mind while you are training a cockatiel and these are:
- Always discourage the bird from nibbling your skin or your ears and fingers. These birds love to explore with their beaks and in time this nibbling might turn into biting.
- Move your hand away from the bird whenever it bites you and always ignore the biting.
- Never admonish the bird when it bites you. If you scold the bird or swat its beak after it has bitten you, it would scare the bird and might reinforce biting.
- Cockatiels have different types of personalities and in some cases the birds may learn quickly and in other cases it might take long time to learn something.
- Let the cockatiel get used to your hand if you want to hand tame it. You can do this by offering the bird food and water with your hand. This would make it comfortable with your hand.
- After the bird accepts food from your hand you should use your finger as a perch in front of the bird and then let the bird accept it as a perch.
Our membership site deals with these things in detail and thus it will help you a lot when you are training your cockatiel and would make the bird learn things well.

|
|

Cockatiel Toys and Why they are Important
|
|
Cockatiels are intelligent birds and they get bored if they do not get proper mental stimulation. Toys are best mental stimulators for this bird. Thus it is important that the cages of these birds are filled with varieties of toys so that it can play with the toys as well as chew them. The chewy toys would help the birds get rid of their excess energies. Before you go for a shopping for the toys for the cockatiels you should have an idea about which toys to buy.
You should not buy toys which are excessively big or are complicated. You should go for those toys which are perfect in size for the birds. |
The toy should not be made of any fragile material because the birds tend to examine the strength of their beaks on the toys and hence the toys should be made of stronger material.
It is best that you go for plastic toys for cockatiel as these toys are good for them and are perfect for them too. Metal toys are also good but you should avoid toys that have sharp edges as they can harm the birds.
Cockatiels also like rope toys but these toys should be cotton or sisal rope and on plastic chains.
You can also get bells and toys that make clicking or clanking noise as the cockatiels love these types of toys.

Your Cockatiel's Diet and Nutritional Requirements

|
When the cockatiels are in wild, they, like all the other members of the parrot family eat a diet of grasses and other plants and seeds. However, while in captivity the diet of the cockatiels must be varied and only seeds and grasses would not help in keeping your cockatiel healthy.
You should give your cockatiel along with the seeds, various types of fruits and vegetables. You can also give them human foods such as cooked beans and grains and also tofu and various types of sprouts and even chicken and cooked or uncooked pasta and fish. Cuttlebones and mineral blocks are a must for these birds and should be kept within the cage. Almonds, walnuts and other nuts and also hard boiled eggs are good for the birds. |
Cockatiels love to have junk foods but these are bad for them and you should never give your cockatiel foods like French fries, or any other salty and fatty or fried foods. Also your cockatiel should not be allowed to have chocolate, coffee or avocado and food with salt and sugar. Also you should never let them allow alcoholic beverages. These foods and drinks might even kill these birds.
When you become a member of our site you would get to know what exactly the nutritional requirement of your cockatiel is and what you should feed it to keep it healthy.

Safe chewing fun for Cockatiels
|
|
Chewing is extremely important for cockatiels and hence you should provide it with toys and also keep branches of trees within the cage so that the bird can chew them and have good exercise of beaks and jaws. However, before you put in toys you should be clear that the toys should be made of wood and not of lead or zinc. Also the toys should not be made of processed wood and no glue should be used in the toys. The trees eucalyptus, madrona and manzanita are safe for the birds. If you have toys made of wood and branches of trees for the birds before placing them in the cages wipe them with damp clothes and never soak them as the moisture in the woods can lead to bacterial growth.
|
Learn more about the safety of the chewing woods in our membership site before you offer the toys to your cockatiel. Here you would get a complete list of the trees that are safe for your cockatiel and which are unsafe for the cockatiel.

Keeping Your Cockatiel's Cage Clean

|
When you have a cockatiel cage in your house before putting the bird in that cage you should clean it thoroughly. This is needed because in many cages you would find traces of zinc and these might make the birds sick and even worse, can poison them. Use water and vinegar solution to wash the cage and also disinfect it thoroughly.
The floor of the cage should be covered by newspaper. This would help to keep the cage clean and also you can watch the bird's droppings to check whether the bird is in perfect health or not.
|
After you have the cockatiel in the cage you should clean the cage frequently so that the bird remains free of infections. Before starting the washing you should wipe the cage and the perches thoroughly and remove all the dust particles and grime. After this you can put the perches, cup and dishes and water bowl in a dishwasher and wash them thoroughly or else you can use 1 cup of bleach to 1 gallon of warm water and then use it to wash them along with the cages. Use a brush to clean every nook and corner of the cage so that there is no dust or dirt in the cage. After washing it with bleach solution then remove all traces of bleach by using a warm water wash of the cage.
Learn more about these in our membership site and you would have a healthy and happy pet for you.

How to breed Cockatiel
|
|
Before breeding the cockatiels you should choose a pair of healthy birds so that the chicks are also healthy. It is necessary to take the birds to the vet and have a thorough check up done so that you are sure of the health of the birds. Also you should keep in mind that the cockatiels should not be allowed to mate until they are 18 months old. The cockatiels are usually ready for mating during the spring and summer season. When they are ready for mating then the sexually mature male cockatiels would sing a mating song and also strut back and forth in its perch while slightly spreading its wings. They also sometimes show aggressiveness within their territory. If you have a female cockatiel then the signs that will show it is ready for mating is sitting on the food dishes, cuddling and sometimes assuming the mating position. |

Personality of Your Cockatiel
|
|
You can sum up the personality of a cockatiel in one word and that is sweet. The best thing about the personality of the cockatiel is that this bird has all the good qualities of a big parrot but not any of its vices. The cockatiel likes to be very cuddly but it never becomes over possessive.
You would find that the best place for a cockatiel to sit is your shoulder and it loves to spend time with the family and would not like to get separated. It will always call out for the owner the moment the owner steps out of the room. Thus it is better that the cage of the bird is kept in a main room so that it never misses the constant activities within the house.
|
However, you should never encourage the cockatiel to get treats whenever it calls because then it will come to know that whenever it calls it will get your attention and hence it will call incessantly. This can later on create a behavioral problem.
You can know more about the personality of the cockatiel in our membership site and hence know your cockatiel well.

parrot might strongly resist being trained.
Thus, training a parrot needs utmost patience, and often,
a considerable amount of time. However, the returns are mostly
worth the effort many times over. Also, it is always easier
to train a baby parrot than an adult one. Though it is not
impossible to train an adult parrot, it is difficult to train
one that was improperly trained a s a baby or had suffered
some trauma.
All About Your Parrot lends you handy tips
on how to break the ice with your Cockatiel, communicate
with it and train it to become a pet that you would
love to show off.
Everything that you might consider trivial might be very crucial
for the health and happiness of your parrot and would ultimately
affect your relationship with it. Following are the most common
questions new parrot owners are confused about:
- Where should I place the cage – Bedroom, living
room, balcony, one that offers a view of the sky, one
that is in shade?
- How would I know if my Cockatiel is ready for training?
- Where to hold the training – bedroom, balcony,
garden, terrace?
- How long should the training continue?
- Should I train it alone or ask my family to join in?
- What should I do if the parrot doesn’t seem to
be paying attention?
- How do I make my Cockatiel potty-trained?
- How can I let my Cockatiel know that I am happy with its
progress and that I love it?
- How do I control my Cockatiel from hissing or biting?
- How would I know when is the right time to make it
sit on my finger?
